50% of The Çanakkale Bridge is Complete

Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan went to inspect the construction site of the 1915 Çanakkale bridge, among Turkey’s most important projects.

Receiving information from the authorities, Minister Turhan said that the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge will take the first place in the world in terms of engineering works. Expressing the importance of Çanakkale being a city in the west of Turkey, Turhan recalled the battle for independence of the Turkish region in this region 100 years ago and said, “Here we are building the world’s largest span suspension bridge to add a new page to be written in golden letters in the history of our nation. When this bridge is put into service, it will take the first place in the world in terms of engineering works. Hopefully, we plan to put this bridge into service and open it to traffic in March 2022.”

The length of the cables is 162 thousand kilometers

Expressing that the work schedule is continuing as planned, Minister Turhan said, “We are building this project with the build-operate-transfer method. The cost of the project is 2.5 billion euros. We have done the part, which is worth 1 billion 250 million euros so far. In other words, the realization of the work is 50%. We hope to complete the remaining sections and open them to service in the next two years. The distance between the two towers is 2,023 meters. We are building the bridge at this span as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of our Republic. The total length of the bridge including the additional distances except the towers is 4,100 meters. The width of the deck is projected as 45 meters. The height of the legs from the sea level is 318 meters. The weight of the steel used in the deck is 49 thousand tons. The weight of the cables to be used in the construction of this bridge is 33 thousand 268 tons. The length of the cables is 162 thousand kilometers. We will use 114 thousand tons of structural steel in the construction of this bridge. The amount of concrete we will use in the approaching viaducts including anchorage concretes is 230 thousand tons.”

“The crossing of the Çanakkale Strait will now decrease to 6 minutes”

Providing information about the purpose of the bridge, Minister Turhan said, “Çanakkale will now serve as a bridge in our exports with the opening of this bridge. It will be an important transportation axis. No one will spend time waiting for the car ferries working in the Çanakkale Strait. The crossing of the Strait will now decrease to 6 minutes.” Turhan said that they have completed 50% of the bridge in general, and said, “We have reached the 171st meter of 318 meters in height, which is the main building elements of this bridge. Hopefully, we will complete our tower productions around June and we will start cable install operations at the end of this summer and we will reveal the silhouette of our bridge. Hope we all enjoy it!”
