EAR, NOSE AND THROAT SPECIALIST KEMAL DEMİR WARNS: “INCREASE CONSUMING OF FIBER RICH FOODS, EAT HOMEMADE STEWS.”
THE MENU OF THE MONTH
Schools are open; the weather is getting colder. Especially children are prone to catching colds. Unfortunately, when seasons are about to change it is so easy to catch colds for anyone. As soon as you get nasal congestion, your ears start to ache, your throat hurts and you get a runny nose. Ear Nose and Throat Specialist Op. Dr. Kemal Demir of Memorial Ataşehir Hospital tells us that even having a little nasal congestion affects our whole upper respiratory system because our noses, ears, and throats are all connected to each other through channels called sinuses. Demir explains that when our bodies sense an illness they close the gates in other words nasal passages as a defense mechanism: “When people don’t take precautions and depend on only nasal sprays they are actually doing something that could destroy the defense mechanism of their bodies. Saline water doesn’t prevent nasal congestion. If you get nasal congestions easily then you need to strengthen your immune system.” Demir prepared dishes that are full of vitamins for Raillife readers. If you would like to have something sweet, when you or your child gets sick, try the chocolate napoleons.
When people catch a cold, what should they do?
They shouldn’t use medication. They can have herbal teas as supplements. It cannot be said that every herbal tea brand on the market is good. However, rose hip, linden, and sage teas can be drunk. They can ease the effects of the illness by consuming more fruits and vegetables than usual, ventilating rooms as often as possible, getting plenty of oxygen, and increasing the quality of sleep. You may not even have to visit a doctor, but if the symptoms get worse in a few days than you need to see one.
What kind of nutritional plan do you suggest them to follow?
The amount of fluid intake should be increased. The liquids should be at the room temperature. This goes also for herbal teas, stews, and soups. Avoid foods that are hard to digest for a while, consume fiber rich foods more. Decrease the amount of spicy food intake. Homemade stews and soups are our favorites. If meats have been consumed than the fluid intake should be increased. You can have foods that are rich in beta carotene, vitamin A such as spinach, lettuce, cabbage, carrot, red and green peppers; foods that are rich in vitamin C such as lemon, orange, tangerine, kiwi, rose hip, cauliflowers, parsley, radish; foods that are rich in zinc such as fish, almond, nuts, pumpkin seeds, milk, yogurt, and cheeses.
At times such as this, we crave for sweets, what would you suggest to have?
We suggest ice cream because it is light and contains milk. Nutritious foods… You can consume ice cream in winters, too. Melt it on your tongue first. If you consume water at the room temperature in a minute, a warm cup of herbal tea in five minutes, consume ice cream in ten minutes.
Children become sick very often, why do you think so?
Intranasal soft tissue inflammation and adenoid growth are experienced due to our organism’s fight against microorganisms. However, longer the fight, longer we have to live with the side effects. New infections make the problem become more permanent. This causes children to become sick more often. To prevent this from happening, the illness should be treated completely. It is necessary to follow the treatment to the very end, and get a follow-up appointment. In addition, when they go to a doctor’s office for a follow-up visit they should ask ‘What should we do to prevent this from happening again?’
How are we supposed to strengthen our children’s bodies?
Milk and milk products should take an important place in a child’s life. Getting enough sleep, and the quality of sleep are also important. We should teach our children the importance of drinking plenty of water. Have them drink vegetable soups very often.
Children also get sick more often when they go to school or childcare centers. What do you think about that?
Every child’s immune system is vulnerable against sicknesses during certain periods of their lives such as the beginning of school years or being adapted outdoors. It is very natural of them to become sick when they get to meet new bacteria. No panic. Incomplete treatment and not having the immune memory to think that ‘now I know this illness’ are actually the things that we should be scared. It is also not right to remove a child from daycare just because the child keeps getting sick. Take better care of your children; be careful what you feed them; ventilate their rooms regularly and make sure they get enough sleep. Let their bodies meet bacteria and learn how to fight with them. Regardless of how bad the weather conditions are you should still take your child outside for 5-30 minutes every day. You cannot raise them in a closed box.
