Authorized by the Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning in the issue of seperate collection of waste batteries and being the only corporation in Turkey in the collection of waste batteries, ‘Association of Portable Battery Producers and Importers (APBPI) has been running the efforts of waste battery collection.
All around the country, 399 tonnes of waste batteries have been collected with the help of waste battery collection bins put in public places such as, schools, mosques, hospitals and mukhtarships and then put into use of economy. İstanbul, with 124 tonnes, has become the city that contributed to this effort most. Waste batteries are separated in two facilities in Turkey. Non-recyclable waste batteries are disposed of in regulated dump sites.
Protect the Environment
When waste batteries are thrown in garbage, soil, sea, river and sewer, the heavy metals they contain contaminate the underground water reserves. Besides, when batteries and accumulators are disposed of by burning them, poisonous oxides of lead, mercury and cadmium released into the air we are breathing. One small AA size battery contaminates 4 cubic metre of soil and makes that soil unusable for many years. That’s why, it is very important for environmental protection that waste batteries be collected separately and regularly.
