ESSAYS ON OLD ISSUES THAT DON’T GET OLD

AHMET HAŞİM HAS BEEN A MUCH-DEBATED NAME SINCE HE HAD PUBLISHED HIS FIRST POEM IN 1901.

Ahmet Haşim had written a symbolist poem that would be interpreted differently by each reader making different connections with it. Therefore, Ahmet Haşim has been a much-debated name since he had published his first poem in 1901. He owned, on one hand, a very powerful and modern aesthetic so, he could never become a stereotype and no one could deny this. On the other hand, he was an uncompromising representative of a stance and perceiving that was so different than others. Ahmet Haşim has succeeded in drawing the attention to himself with both his poetry and point of views in every period.

Ahmet Haşim’s poetry has been criticized mostly for presenting insufficient materials. He used words, lines, and subjects that were unique to him and they were being noticed immediately when used by other poets. Contrary to his poems, his essays are rich in variety of issues and subjects. The subjects of his essays were sometimes the wealthy women who wear fur or who think wearing for make them European, and sometimes the linguistic revolution. Surprisingly, Ahmet Haşim had valued simplicity and populism in his essays by letting aside the constraint and elitism that he had in his poems.

He had discussed the daily issues
Certainly, writing in a daily newspaper such as İkdam had played a big part in this. The essays by Ahmet Haşim published between 1928-1929 in İkdam have been collected by İnci Enginün and Zeynep Kerman, thanks to their careful works, and published under the title called According to Us and His Other Essays in İkdam (Dergâh P.) If we observe carefully, we see that the essays were published in every few days. So, Ahmet Haşim had written an essay, which was interesting, clear, and understandable, to engage the newspaper readers in every few days. Thus, he had to discuss the daily issues. Then, this question must be answered: Why should we read the essays, which were written in 1928 –on daily issues–, in 2014 or should we really?

Although, Ahmet Haşim had written on transitory matters, his point of view in reflecting them had made them permanent. This happens with the touch of his skillful hands and his artistic point of view that faces the world, people, and events. In other words, the ordinary events come out of being ordinary in his hands. Ahmet Haşim’s According to Us and His Other Essays in İkdam is one of the most beautiful examples of it.

Ahmet Haşim’s world
Ahmet Haşim’s poems are actually hard to understand. Though, his poems doesn’t evoke curiosity about him. On the contrary to his poems that are hard to understand and require time to appreciate them, his essays have the simplicity and the power to encourage readers to become curious about the writer. They are interesting, easy to appreciate, and engaging to every type of reader. I am sure reading According to Us and His Other Essays in İkdam is going to make things easier to enter into his world. This world has the richness to nurture the different types of readers that emerge in different periods and it is a necessary part of the Turkish literature.
