A BAG MADE TO LAST: HERMES BIRKIN

A BAG MADE TO LAST: HERMES BIRKIN

THIS BAG IS AGELESS AND CAN USE IT ALL YOUR LIFE. WHEN YOUR GRANDCHILDREN SEE YOUR BAG 50 YEARS LATER, THEY MAY WISH TO RUN OFF WITH IT!

The Hermes company got into business in 1837 making leather accessories for saddles and horse-riding. It obtained a patent for zips in the 1920s and began to use them in women’s bags; this is how the firm got its place in women’s lives. Later on, it turned to bags, gloves, belts and casual men’s and women’s wear.

The figure who made the brand well-known to the whole world was Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco. Kelly had kept her bag on her abdomen to hide her pregnancy in 1956 and photographs of this had been published in all the newspapers. This bag later gained fame as the ‘Kelly Model’.

The story of the Birkin model is also as interesting… CEO of Hermes, Jean-Louis Dumas sat next to actress Jane Birkin on a flight in 1984. While Birkin was browsing in her Hermes Kelly bag, Dumas asked her what a perfect woman’s should be like. The famous actress said the bag she was holding in her hand was not suitable for daily use and that is how the Birkin model was born on the plane! The Birkin model was so designed as to include all the features the famous star wanted and offered for sale in the same year.

One waits 6 years in line 6 to get one
Enthusiasts who have their names entered the list to buy a Birkin, the most popular model of all the Hermes bags, may wait in line as long as six years! The reason is that today Hermes’s Birkin is regarded as the symbol of “power and status”.
