What would you have to say as a popular actor of romantic-comedy films for a certain period?
I remember those days perfectly, I had the opportunity to co-star with the world’s most beloved actresses. It was a great opportunity for me to work with names such as Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, and Jennifer Garner.
How did you decide to change your career?
After playing in many successful romantic-comedy films, I asked myself, “How long could I continue doing this?” Eventually, I got stuck at some point. This is true. I started waiting for scenarios that would challenge me. I was scared at first; however, later I thought that I was an actor and this was my job, so I could animate different characters. So, I did.
The story of how you met with your wife is like the story of a romantic-comedy film; could you tell us about a bit?
I was out having fun with a close friend of mine. I saw Camila Alves, who is my wife now, at a restaurant and I liked her very much. I did not know her. I had a beard and I was wearing sunglasses. So, she didn’t recognize me. My friend went to Camila at the end of the night and told her that I wanted to meet her but Camila kept her distance. Later, I searched and found her. This was how our friendship began. Today, we have three children.
What do you think of you as a father?
I have always wished to become a father someday. Today, I feel very lucky. Family is the most important thing in life. Crowded family concept was even warmer for me. Having a child is the real thing that matures a man. Being a father made me a better actor and a compassionate human being.
How was the process of getting-ready for Dallas Buyers Club, the movie that brought you an Oscar?
You know that I played a character who was a drug addict in that movie. I went into a pre-shooting camp and lost 18 kg for the part. The press even announced that I had cancer at the time after taking my photos.
What was your family’s reaction?
Since they got to see me everyday, it was not a shock for them but one day my daughter said, “Daddy, why does your neck looks like a giraffe’s?” My spouse Camila helped me concentrate on my diet consisting of some fish and veggies everyday. I was always hungry and angry. I was feeling like a baby bird opening its bill and screaming for food. On the other hand, I started to feel that little sleep was sufficient and my memory became stronger.
How does it feel to work with Jean Marc Valley?
He is an amazing director. He is so intelligent. He values what he does unbelievably. This is why I liked him a lot and accepted to be a part of the project.
What is your life philosophy?
Our decisions make us who we are; however, life is too complicated to make a sweeping statement like ‘right decisions make us happy and wrong ones sad’. I am always trying to make the decisions that will make me happy instead of making the right decision every time. It is not as easy as it sounds of course. You should know yourself well. Will you be content with a momentary happiness? Are you brave enough to turn down a small happiness in order to experience a bliss? You should think of these questions before making a decision on anything.
Which was your favorite part?
Joe in Killer Joe was my favorite.
“Interstellar” became a huge hit, how did you prepare for it?
I had to learn how time and gravity changed in space because I was animating a character who cared about his team as a pilot. Then, I got to focus on the humane aspects of the character; father-daughter relation, family, human desires.
How was working with Christopher Nolan?
Chris is a very meticulous person. He is aware why he is doing it when forcing people out of their comfort zones. We were hardly finding time to breath during shootings. Nolan is a great leader. He is also a wonderful problem solver.
Kate Winslet said once that the production company wanted you to co-star with her in Titanic but the director wanted to work with Leonardo Di Caprio. What would you say about this?
Yes, that is true. Director wants to have the cast that would reflect his inner world. Leonardo was great in Titanic. So, I have no resentment about the movie whatsoever.
You are very successful animating the character in the series called True Detective. Can you share a memory from the set?
I had the theme of Rocky played for the whole crew before the first big fight scene. We began to dancing salsa and tango before fighting. This helped us to get rid of our tension.
What do you do when you are not working?
I have a family so I prefer to spend time with them.
How did your marriage and becoming a father affect you career?
Marriage and having an orderly life affect your career in the good way no matter what your profession is. I was in no hurry to get married but when it was the time for it I got married. I owe my successful career to my happy and peaceful family life.
Do you watch your own movies?
No, I don’t like it at all. I always change the channel if one of my movies come up. Watching myself act doesn’t make me happy. My wife says that I should but I just can’t.
