It is Tech Time in Railways

With the prioritized railway policies implemented since 2003, high-speed and fast railway lines are being built, the existing system is being renewed, modernized, advanced railway industry is developing; with the liberalization of railway transportation, TCDD Transportation leads the sector as a railway train operator, while the private sector has a greater voice in the railway sector.

The high-speed railway line, which started in 2003 with the foundation of the Ankara-İstanbul High-Speed Railway Line, has reached a length of 1,213 kilometers. New routes will be added to the lines that are being constructed. TCDD and TCDD Transport, which took action to meet the increasing demand for high-speed trains, reached an agreement with Siemens from Germany for the supply of 12 High-Speed Train (YHT) sets in 2018.

Siemens, a global brand in the railway sector, delivered the first of these sets in a short time and the set reached Ankara. The set will be tested for two months and a significant capacity increase will be provided. The delivery of the other 11 high-speed train sets is planned in stages and to be completed by the end of 2020.

TURKEY LOVES THE HIGH SPEED TRAIN

With the high-speed railway operations that started between Ankara-Eskişehir in 2009, Ankara-Konya in 2011, Eskişehir-Konya in 2013, and Eskişehir-İstanbul and Konya-İstanbul in 2014, more than 52.4 million passengers have been transported to date. YHT has brought not only the cities it reaches but also many other cities closer. High-speed train lines in the Ankara-Konya-İstanbul triangle have significantly reduced travel times to cities such as Bursa, Kütahya, Karaman, Denizli, Afyonkarahisar, and Antalya through combined transportation in the forms of YHT + bus and YHT + train. The economic, social and cultural life of 13 provinces and 42% of Turkey’s population have become more dynamic through combined transportation with high-speed trains.

HARMONY OF SPEED AND COMFORT

The high-speed train sets, which consist of a total of 8 wagons and have a length of 200 meters, can speed 300 kilometers. High-speed train sets with 483 passenger capacity include a total of  45 business (3 business boxes with a capacity of 12 people), 436 economy, and 2 disabled seats. Considering passenger demand in Turkey, the number of mobile phone and laptop charge plugins in cars and the number of seats and tables in the dining car of new YHT sets are improved. The music and cinema-oriented entertainment system programs were also enriched for the passengers.

YHT SAVES TIME

With the sets to be put into service as of February 2020, the number of daily high-speed train services will reach from 44 to 76, the number of passengers transported per year in 2020 will reach 10 million from 200 thousand, and will reach 14 million in 2021. Again, the current average number of high-speed train passengers per day, which is 22 thousand, will reach 30 thousand in 2020, and will be 40 thousand in 2021. Also, with the addition of 12 YHT sets, express trips will be organized on long-distance routes, thus reducing the travel time between Ankara-İstanbul and Konya-İstanbul by 30 minutes.
