FİLİZ AKIN, THE STAR OF YEŞİLÇAM WITH ‘EUROPEAN FACE”, WHO SERVED THE FILM SETS FOR MANY YEARS, IS CURRENTLY SPENDING EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT DIFFERENT COUNTRIES. WE CAME TOGETHER WITH THE BEAUTIFUL STAR THAT ENJOYS KNOWING THE CULTURE OF THE EVERY COUNTRY SHE VISITS AND EXPLORE THEIR NEW TASTES AND WE TALKED ABOUT HER NEW TRAVEL PLANS AND PROJECTS. OF COURSE, WE SPOKE ABOUT HER CHILDHOOD, YOUTH AND MARRIAGE LIFE.
What are you doing in these days; do you have any book projects?
I love travelling a lot. For that reason, I especially go to different places and stroll after my heart. I research the kitchens of the world. You know my last cookbook with the name ‘Salute to Flavor’ has been published recently. Thus, my projects for books never end. I will also have a movie film, yet I don’t want to tell about it and break the spell.
Indeed, you have learned cooking well later on…
It fell to a lot when I was in Paris. Otherwise, I was in bad with kitchen. When it comes to you, you learn everything.
You have written in one of your travel writing; “Why didn’t I come to Maldives before?” What was the thing attracted your attention?
I like going to countries that I wonder and I have never seen before. Travelling around the world is important to me. Meeting the people there and seeing different cultures is very exciting. I also met different people in Maldives and saw a different nature there. I felt the peace of blue deeply there. It was just like a heaven.
“I GO TRAVELLING WHENEVER I CAN”
How do you feel in another country?
I never feel like a stranger. On the contrary, I try to learn and understand the traditions and culture of that country. Tasting the dishes specific to that country is another pleasure for me. I note the tastes which I like or which taste different. I would like to explore the nature of that country and visit its museums and exhibitions. I go travelling whenever I can. Of course, I make researches before I go but I try to know the country through travelling around.
Do you have any plans of travel for the following days?
Of course, there are also places in my country which I want to visit. For example, I would like to see the excavation of Göbeklitepe which is the first temple which was proved to be older than Neolithic age. Urfa is one of the places I want to visit most. As a person who is interested in eating culture, I wonder about ‘İmam Çağdaş’ Restaurant in Antakya and Gaziantep.
“THE FAME DOES NOT MAKE YOU A HAPPY PERSON”
When you look back to past from today, what sort of days were at the back?
I see the days which I lived my life fully, sometimes I had sorrow and sometimes joy yet I always remember as beautiful memories. However, I remember that I failed taking care of my son when I think about those days. Due to my job, I was in the movie sets and I could not spend enough time with my son. I would like to have spent better days with him.
Is your son angry with you since you failed in spending time enough with him?
This situation never caused a problem. We, mother and son, get on very well. He had naughty times like every child did. We are both fond of each other.
Mrs. Akın, what does being famous mean to you?
Definitely, its moral aspects are dominating. Being loved by the society makes me happier not being famous. For someone, being a star may mean the guarantee for a better life, earning money and having a luxurious life. Glory and fame are the guarantee for a definite standard but they don’t make you a happy person.
Then, what makes you happy?
Meeting my close friends and chatting with them, watching movies, reading books, drawing pictures are all enough to make me happy.
What do you think about new age Turkish cinema? What changed according to you?
There are good projects but our period was good as well. I think it isn’t so easy nowadays. Because, the sector has grown up, there are more actors and the competence has increased. We lived a different fame during our period. Since there was no television, the public regarded inaccessible. With television, this spell was broken. Especially after internet, there is nothing inaccessible left. We were regarded as divine. From now on, it is hard to encounter such things.
Are there any serials you follow?
There is no serial which I especially follow. I cannot list the names one by one but I like new performers and I find them rather talented. So long as I find time, I watch some serials.
If you had a magic stick and you returned back to acting, how would it be?
I am often asked, ‘Would you be acting if you came to this world again?’ However, I am not interested in it any more. You experience satisfaction when you personate all types of characters such as teachers, singers, princess and beggars.
“I SORT OUT MY PROBLEMS MYSELF”
Who do you prefer to share your happiness?
In general, I try to sort out myself when I have a problem. If I cannot sort out myself, I share it with my husband. If it is necessary, I provide support to my husband. The happiness of the person I live with also makes me happy. Thus, I tell nice words to make him happy. The style you use in your relationship of marriage is rather important. You should be careful in order not to break his heart.
You are happy about your marriage then…
I am happy. It is difficult to estimate your marriage life from the beginning. During the period you flirt, mutually courting is made yet it is over when you get married. And we see only good tempers of the person next to us before we got married. It is necessary to think well before giving this important decision. I always met very nice people. Up to some extent, marriage is the matter of luck. My marriage to Sönmez began thanks to our friends; we got married through prearranged marriage.
When you think about your childhood, what type of days do you remember?
They were nice days. I had a happy childhood. I was naughty, too. I displayed unexpected behaviors which are not expected from a girl and climbed up the trees. I also had plans for the future, but they were plans which may exhibit continuous changes like every child did. My mother was interested in art and motivated me to be an actress. She was fond of me. She gave me her love extremely. Now, I think she had a passion inside her for being an actress. Since she failed in achieving this, she experienced this wish with me.
“MY SCHOOL LIFE WAS AMUSING”
How were your school years?
My school life was also entertaining. I used to imitate, make my friends laugh and amuse them. I wouldn’t draw attention as a beauty among my friends. I was more ordinary than my friends. After all, I used to compete with boys.
Were there boyfriends or flirts during that period?
We were not similar to the youth of present times. Of course, we also had friends but we were not comfortable about this matter. Currently, young girls are chasing boys. When I think about our youth period, we had more romantic relationships. Waiting your beloved one in cold weather, crossing in front of his house…
The process of disease…
Did the disease you had cause any changes in your life?
At any time in my life, my career or earning money wasn’t my prior objective. I understood that the most important thing in the life was love. I realized that we ignored the things in our hands. Actually, I am calmer. I am not as distracted as I was in the past. I look at the life from the perspective similar to the philosophy of Mevlana. I am maturated. From now on, I can recognize the frost particle on a leaf.
Did the thought of death come to your mind?
Thanks to my doctor, I never thought about it. Because he told me that nobody had died of this disease. When the word cancer is uttered, we instantly think of death. One of my close friends had died of cancer. For that reason, I knew all about the things I may encounter and the process. I thought that other people also got sick, ‘what is different with me?’ I never thought that ‘Why did this happen to me?’ Of course, you feel so sorry when you hear about it first. You feel anxious beyond sadness since you think you are at the end of your visit to this world. You feel pity about you and start to mourn for yourselves.
