TECHNICALLY, IN NECIP TOSUN’S ANSIZIN HAYAT (SUDDEN LIFE) A FIRST PERSON NARRATIVE IS USED IN THE STORIES. IN OTHER WORDS, THE EVENTS ARE TOLD BY THE PROTAGONIST. THIS TECHNIQUE IS THE CAUSE OF THE HEAVINESS OF THE ASPECTS IN THE STORIES SUCH AS THINKING, MAKING TERMS WITH THE PAST, EVALUATING SITUATIONS.
Thirteen stories take place in Necip Tosun’s Sudden Life (Ansızın Hayat, Hece Publications). Mature characters making terms with their pasts are the subject throughout the stories. Among these characters, there are a retired judge, a book lover and those who remember their childhood friends or think about their mothers. They all go back to their childhoods in order to understand themselves; they almost relive their childhoods and youths. According to the author, no matter how many times one says that I have changed, I have grown, I go beyond myself, I have left everything in the past; one always stays in his/her childhood or goes back there to start a new journey from there.
Technically, a first person narrative is used in the stories. In other words, the events are told by the protagonist. This technique is the cause of the heaviness of the aspects in the stories such as thinking, making terms with the past, evaluating situations. As the protagonist of the each story narrates the events, he or she thinks and passes judgments at the same time. We can name it as an interior monologue technique. Interior monologue: a person’s inner thoughts. The readers witness this monologue. Witnessing places a distance between the reader and the character. More precisely, it shows that there are things that the character wants to hide, although it opens up these interior monologues to the readers. That is why, Sudden Life is full of stories where the readers cannot identify themselves with the characters; therefore, they have to take their lessons from the stories on their own.
Thoughts accompany emotions. Longing, remorse, anger, sorrow, love… Emotions are the elements that cause thoughts to emerge. Necip Tosun starts from feelings but does not stop there. He has them gain dimension by means of different point of views. The author tries to keep his angle of view as wide as he can. This is also the reason why he treats the events that took place about forty or fifty years ago. He wants to treat them through a wide angle of view.
An interesting situation exists in the stories that make up Sudden Life. The characters that are lonely, aged, have nothing to do, have to make tragic decisions were actually in the same situation also in their youth. In other words, they did not have colorful lives and they fell from grace as they got older. In fact, almost all of them had experienced the same tragic loneliness in their years of childhood and youth. However, the pain of what experienced is felt more often and intense as they get older.
As an example to that, we can mention the subject of “being from a rural town”. We come across to that subject throughout the stories. The feelings and thoughts of the characters are developed suitable with the rural life. It is not possible to change them. One who was born and grown in a rural town can never deliver himself or herself from thinking or feeling like a rustic does, although he or she leaves the town.
Sudden Life is like a journey that resembles life that is not clear where it begins and stops and it ends suddenly, although no one thinks that it will end someday.
